Labiaplasty in Pittsburgh, PA

Labiaplasty is a body procedure to address cosmetic concerns with the appearance of the vagina and to improve sexual experience. At Radiance Plastic Surgery in Bridgeville,PA, under the care of Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Lori Cherup, labiaplasty helps patients can enjoy natural-looking, long-lasting enhancement with this surgical procedure.

What Is Labiaplasty Surgery?

Labiaplasty is a plastic surgery procedure for altering the labia minora (inner labia) and the labia majora (outer labia), the folds of skin surrounding the human vulva. In general, the female perineum, which includes the vulva (labia majora and minora, and clitoris), perineal body (muscle between the vagina and anus), the vagina, and the anus should look normal to a woman.

Enlargement or stretching of any of these tissues can lead to sexual dysfunction, difficulties with hygiene, and a less-than-feminine appearance. With menopause, there is thinning and atrophy of the structures. Childbirth can also cause unwanted changes in this area.

Dr. Cherup’s trained eye allows her to preserve the natural contour and pigmentation of the labia with minimal scarring while maintaining sensation and producing the most natural results. As a female plastic surgeon, you can trust Dr. Cherup to be discreet and answer your questions with care and respect.

Is Labiaplasty Right for Me?

Labiaplasty may be right for you if you experience physical irritation, chafing, or self-consciousness due to enlarged or asymmetrical labia. It may affect your comfort during exercise, sexual activity, or when wearing tight clothes. You may also consider labia reduction if your labia have changed in size or shape due to childbirth, aging, or genetics.

Women who pursue this labiaplasty procedure often seek a more balanced, aesthetic appearance or improved intimate comfort. If you live in Bridgeville, Mt. Lebanon, or the Pittsburgh area and are considering female genital rejuvenation, this may be the right time to explore your options.

Labiaplasty Surgery Consultation

Why Choose A Plastic Surgeon?

On some level, the aesthetic appearance of the female genitalia deserves as much consideration as the aesthetic appearance of any other part of the body. Many textbooks have been published on the principles of breast, eyelid, and facial plastic surgery. Still, there are no textbooks on perineal (that which encompasses the labia, clitoris, and vagina) rejuvenation. It is a fairly new subject.

Most published research on labiaplasty comes from gynecology, with limited input from plastic surgery. While plastic surgeons are open to learning from GYN colleagues, their techniques often overlook important factors like sensation, blood supply, and tissue viability. As a result, many plastic surgeons prefer to rely on proven principles of tissue rearrangement and healing.

Patients who seek consultation for labiaplasty feel that their labia minora or majora are enlarged, droopy, asymmetric, or deflated. They want the perineal area to look and feel normal, feminine, and not aged. Sometimes, their labia get pinched, torn, or abraded by exercise activities or clothes.

Your labiaplasty consultation with board-certified and renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Cherup will be private and quiet. She will listen to your concerns. She will examine your external perineum and diagnose asymmetries and abnormalities of proportion. She will propose a plan to remove excess tissue or plump up tissues that need to be improved.

Labiaplasty Surgery Procedure

The labiaplasty surgery usually lasts 1-1.5 hours. Our anesthesiologist will use IV sedation anesthesia to put you to sleep before injections numb the perineal tissues. Dr. Cherup uses the trimming technique for the labia minora tissues and clitoral hood. She uses a central wedge excision technique for the labia majora tissues.

All sutures are absorbable, and only a few knots must be removed by day 10. Ointment, perineal gauze, and an ice pack will be used as dressings as you move to our comfortable recovery room.

Post-Operative Recovery

Discomfort will last for two to five days. Lying horizontally with an ice pack on your perineum to keep swelling to a minimum is the most important maneuver you can do for the first two to five days after surgery. Sitting is terrible for the swelling. Your perineum must be washed each time you urinate or move your bowels.

The bruising resolves in one week. You may return to work in one week. The final size and shape will be apparent in about three weeks. Taking a week off work and lying in a horizontal position will significantly reduce the swelling and make your recovery much more tolerable.

Risks of Labiaplasty Surgery

Prolonged swelling is usually caused by too much activity in the five days immediately after surgery. The swelling will eventually go down. Those with a job where they sit likely take the longest to recover from the swelling. It is very important that ice packs are used, and snug-fitting underwear that almost acts like a girdle is used to help put compression on the tissues.

Irregularities along the suture line can occur because these tissues are very soft and floppy when one is suturing them. Any palpable or visible irregularities can be addressed at three or four months after surgery. It is usually unnecessary.

Resulting asymmetries, meaning one side being larger than the other, could happen. Frankly, a little bit of asymmetry looks normal. If the asymmetry is causing you problems, experienced plastic surgeon Dr. Cherup and you will discuss any revision surgery needed.

Decreased sensation in your labia will happen in the initial week after surgery. It eventually should return to normal. Dr. Cherup has never encountered decreased sensation in the clitoris as a post-op problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Labiaplasty is considered a safe outpatient procedure when performed by a qualified plastic surgeon like Dr. Cherup. Risks are low, especially when aftercare instructions are followed closely.

Most patients return to non-strenuous activity within one week, while full healing may take four to six weeks. Swelling and sensitivity are normal and gradually decrease.

The surgery is done under local anesthesia or light sedation, so you won’t feel discomfort during the procedure. Post-operative soreness is usually mild and can be managed with medication.

Scars from labiaplasty are minimal and typically hidden in the natural folds of the labia. Over time, they fade and become barely noticeable.

The goal of the procedure is to create a more symmetrical, natural appearance while preserving sensitivity. Many women report improved comfort and satisfaction with how they look and feel.

During a labiaplasty consultation, Dr. Cherup will discuss your concerns, goals, medical history, and reasons for considering the procedure. She may evaluate your anatomy and determine whether labiaplasty is appropriate for your needs. The consultation is also your opportunity to ask about surgical techniques, anesthesia options, recovery, risks, scarring, and the results you can realistically expect.

Before your consultation, write down your symptoms, concerns, and goals so you can discuss them clearly. Bring a list of current medications, supplements, allergies, previous surgeries, and any relevant medical conditions. You may also want to prepare questions.

Most patients are told to wait six weeks before resuming sexual activity, using tampons, or doing anything that puts pressure on the healing tissue. You should only resume intimacy once the incisions have healed, swelling and tenderness have improved, and your surgeon has cleared you. If there is pain, pulling, or irritation, it is best to stop and give the area more time to heal.

After labiaplasty, follow your surgeon’s aftercare instructions closely. In general, patients are advised to keep the area clean and dry, wear loose clothing, use pads rather than tampons, avoid friction, and take prescribed medications as directed. Cold compresses may be recommended early in recovery to help with swelling. Contact your surgeon if you notice worsening pain, heavy bleeding, unusual discharge, fever, or signs of infection.

You may notice improvement as swelling decreases, but the final results take time. Most patients see significant healing within several weeks, while residual swelling can continue to improve over the next few months. In some cases, the final refined result may take up to six months as the tissue settles and swelling fully resolves.

Labiaplasty results are generally long-lasting because the removed tissue does not grow back. However, natural aging, pregnancy, childbirth, hormonal changes, and tissue stretching can affect the area over time. Maintaining realistic expectations is important, since the body can continue to change after surgery.

Labiaplasty can affect sensation, though many patients heal without long-term sensitivity problems when the procedure is performed carefully. Temporary numbness, tenderness, tingling, or heightened sensitivity may occur during recovery. Long-term changes in sensation are possible, so it is important to discuss this risk with your surgeon before surgery.

Labiaplasty is not designed to improve sexual function directly, but it may reduce tugging, irritation, or discomfort caused by enlarged or uneven labial tissue. Some patients feel more comfortable during intimacy after healing.

Yes, labiaplasty can be performed after pregnancy once the body has fully healed and postpartum tissue changes have stabilized. Many surgeons recommend waiting until you are no longer experiencing major swelling, hormonal changes, or healing from childbirth. If you plan to have more children, your surgeon can help you decide whether to proceed now or wait, since future pregnancy and childbirth may affect the results.

After labiaplasty, avoid strenuous exercise, sexual activity, tampon use, tight clothing, cycling, swimming, hot tubs, and activities that create friction or pressure until your surgeon clears you. You should also avoid picking at stitches, applying unapproved products, or returning to your normal routine too quickly. Following your recovery instructions can help reduce the risk of bleeding, infection, wound separation, and prolonged swelling.
