Common sense answers about liposuction.
Question: "Dear Dr. Cherup: My legs have always been big - I am 5' 2 and weigh 125lbs. I am 41 and have a tiny waist. I am desperate, my legs have ruined my life, everyone makes fun of them, even my own family and my husband is turned off by them. The older I get the worse they get. Please help."- Polly, Pittsburgh, PA
Answer: Dear Polly: Big legs can be caused by big muscles, loose skin or too much fat. First, only exercise can produce beautiful shape and tone. Ballet and swimming slims bulky legs, running and weight training develops muscle. Extra fat deposits in the thighs, knees and ankles can be removed by liposuction done through a small incision in the groin or posterior knee. Looser skin (left after a weight gain then loss) can be tightened by medial and lateral thigh lifts. Sometimes both need to be done in order to give an optimal result. Post-op recovery involves elevation of legs, compression garments worn for 3 weeks, and minimal sitting with the legs down until bruising is resolved. You don’t need to suffer with a disproportionate body – there’s a solution
